Dr Peter Bennich
Dr Peter Bennich is a senior policy officer at the Swedish Energy Agency (SEA). SEA is subordinate to the Ministry of Infrastructure, and as such responsible for product policies on EU level designed for resource and energy efficiency. This includes negotiation, implementation and enforcement of product regulations. SEA also has its own product testing lab, which is an invaluable resource during all these phases. Apart from working with the product policies on the EU-level, Dr Bennich is also involved in international work. Since 2011, he has been the Swedish representative in the IEA Energy-Efficient End-use Equipment program, where governments from Asia, North America and Europe work together by sharing experiences on product policy programs in the different regions. He is also involved in the project Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances (EELA), a capacity building project run by UNIDO together with the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) and Eastern African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE), financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). The aim is to support the establishment of a regulatory framework in the SADC and EAC regions where MEPS and energy labelling are introduced and/or supported for products such as lighting, white goods, AC etc. MEPS and energy labels remove substandard products by creating a level playing field on the market for manufacturers, suppliers etc; furthermore, they reward companies at the frontier of product development.
